Athletic Career
 
Grew up in San Francisco, played soccer for first time at age 13, 1955
 
Captain, center half of Presidio Jr. High’s undefeated city championship team, 1956
 
Earned 8 letters at Presidio Jr. High (soccer, basketball, track & field, and baseball), 1954-1957; playoffs in all sports
 
Honored as Outstanding Athlete of School upon graduation from Presidio Jr. High, 1957
 
Washington High School varsity soccer, 1957-1960 (Captain, center half, MVP honors)
 
First-Team All-league honors all three years at Washington; reached playoffs all varsity years, including undefeated city championship, in 1958
 
All-league honors in track & field (51' 4" with 10 lb. shot-put - 3rd farthest throw in Northern California, junior year); averaged 48 '- 49' over 3 years at Washington H.S.
 
Northern California U-18 championship, with Mercury A.C. club team, coached by Steve Negoesco, 1960

Captain and center-half of undefeated National U-19 Champions Hakoah A.C., coached by Steve Negoesco; team defeated Los Angeles 3-0, St. Louis 2-0, and Philadelphia 2-0, for the national title, 1961 – first youth team (in any age group) west of St. Louis to win a national championship in soccer- only youth team from San Francisco ever to win a national championship

Center half of University of California, Berkeley J.V. team; undefeated season and conference championship, 1960        

City College of San Francisco’s undefeated conference championship team, 1961; defeated U.S. Div. I Top-20 teams USF, San Jose State, and UC Berkeley (and Stanford); earned Junior College All-American 1st Team and All-Conference 1st Team honors

United States National Amateur Championship team Schwaben F.C. of the Chicago Major League (defeated Philadelphia 4-0 for title) coached by U.S. Olympic Coach, George Meyer, 1964. Walk-on starter, team had 5 Olympic players.  Toured Germany on game tour w/Schwaben, achieving 4-2-2 record 

San Francisco Athletic Club, top division at Balboa Stadium, 4 seasons, 1970-1974. Northern California All-Star selection, played vs. U.S. Olympic Team, 1972 

 
Coaching and Organizing

 

Established Soccer as Intramural Sport at University of Wisconsin, 1963. Organized signup campaign, increased program from 75 to 955 participants!  (New fields were installed on west side of campus to accommodate increased participation.)

Began teaching youth soccer in San Francisco, 1960

Began coaching youth soccer in Marin, 1974. Has coached over 65,000 players on all levels
 
Coached at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, 1978-1992 (varsity girls, frosh-soph boys and girls teams )

Taught soccer classes at nine schools in southern Marin County, 1974-1985 (Park, Old Mill, Tam Valley, Strawberry Point, Marin Terrace, Homestead, Tam Creek, Children's Circle Center, and Children's Cultural Center) 

Co-founded Mill Valley Soccer Club (1976), one of Marin County's strongest soccer organizations (with 1800-1900 youth registered currently), distinguished originally by also fielding men's and women's teams competitively prominent in Northern California.  Co-founded Mill Valley Girls' League, 1982

Member of Mill Valley Soccer Club Board of Directors, 1976-2004 
Founded and coached women's soccer group, 1976-1992; taught womens' soccer class that inspired founding of Marin Women's Soccer League, 1995 

Began Pee Wee Soccer program, for children ages 3-6, in Mill Valley, 1978. (Later added similar program in Novato.) Coached approximately 12,000 Pee Wee Soccer participants, 1978-present

Founder, director & coach of Marin Soccer Camp, county's longest running and most attended soccer camp, 1982. (Later added San Francisco and Tahoe Soccer Camps.) Camp facilitates, on annual basis, 1000 boys & girls, ages 5-14. Features top coaching staff including talented top college players and international professionals. Guest coaches have included Steve Negoesco (USF), Anson Dorrance (North Carolina),  Lothar Osiander (US National and Olympic teams), John Doyle (U.S. World Cup team), Dominic Kinnear (Houston Dynamos), and many other prominent coaches

Co-founded Marin Indoor Soccer League, 1985. Director of Winter Indoor Soccer League (1988-present), Marin County’s longest running and most attended indoor soccer program (156-178 teams, 1600-1800 participants annually). Founded San Francisco Winter Indoor Soccer League, 2009

 

Recognition and Honor

Received Key to the City of San Francisco from Mayor George Christopher, 1961

Inducted as charter member (with Ollie Matson, Ann Curtis, and others) to George Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame, 1990

Voted “Best Youth Athletic Coach in Marin County” in Pacific Sun readers’ poll, 1991 (only year that particular category was included). 

North Bay recipient of “Sports Dad of the Year” award, presented by Bay Area Women in Sports to “a man contributing the most to the development of women’s sports in Northern California,” 1993

Featured with Bill Walsh and Tara VanDerveer in “Sports Coaching Principles Applied to Parenting,” video pilot, 1993
 
Featured coach in Golden Gater Productions’ international World Cup Preview shows on ABC-TV, 1994  
 
Man of the Year Award by Bay Area Male Involvement Network, for achievements as a positive role model for fathers, 2000
